The nation went into an uproar this week when the “culprit,” Ranveer Allahabadia, made a crude joke on Samay Raina’s now infamous show, ‘India’s Got Latent’. From people to news anchors to YouTubers, everybody is beating their chests about how insensitive and disgusting Ranveer Allahabadia is. The incident has garnered so much outrage that our political leaders and religious gurus have reached a point where they have demanded Ranveer’s arrest and even encounter. Yes, you heard that right.
But I have an unpopular opinion – I believe that this incident is getting way more attention than it deserves. Yes, Ranveer’s comment was insensitive and I do not support what he said. However, I do support Freedom of Expression. And let me tell you this – whatever upheaval this non-issue has caused is just a way to distract you and me from much more pressing issues that need our attention rather than a stupid joke by a YouTuber. Give me 20 min and I will tell you why I say this.
